Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

Buddy the elf once said "the best way to spread Christmas cheer, is singing loud for all to hear" but if you are tired of belting out Wham's Last Christmas or don't feel like your vocals live up to BeyoncĂ©'s - seriously, did anyone else even sing on that Destiny's Child's Christmas album? -, here are a few other ways to get yourself into the Christmas spirit :

Christmas Lights
.

You know Santa is definitely coming to town when all the streets and shops are lit up with Christmas lights - how else is he supposed to find Selfridges and Harrods otherwise? Grab a friend, a red cup and go have a look at your city all dressed up for the season.

Christmas is all Around
.
Nothing gets you into the Christmas spirit quite like watching your favourite Christmas film with a cup of hot chocolate, by the fire. Some of my ultimate favourites, which never fail to make me feel oh-so-festive are Miracle on 34th Street, Elf, The Holiday, Meet Me in St Louis and of course, Love Actually.

Love, (Secret) Santa.
.

Secret Santa is the ultimate way to get into the spirit. It's fun, festive and (usually) pretty cheap. Marks and Spencer has a great selection of gifts under £20, so when they asked me to take part in their very own game of Secret Santa, I couldn't say yes quick enough. I drew one of my favourite bloggers and friend's name and knew what I wanted to get her straight away - that was something to get her party-ready ahead of our Christmas dinner party and cookie cutters. A few days later, I found she'd sent me this gorgeous REN Moroccan Rose gift set - oh so appropriate since we are planning on taking a trip to Morocco in the new year. Can you guess who's this blogger? Psst, she's got one of the coolest boyfriends around. It is Tanya from fashionknowsnolimits.com - Kuddos to you if you are reading this!

Hit the Christmas Markets
.

Christmas markets are everywhere at this time of the year. I mean, absolutely everywhere - from Hyde Park to the beach, at home. They are the perfect excuse to crack out your favourite bobble hat and indulge in some festive treats, drink (too much) mulled wine and just fool around with friends and family. My favourite markets include Hyde Park, the Southbank and the Trocadero, in Paris.

I'd Do Anything
.

Going to the theatre is something I love doing all year around, but some plays and musicals, such as Oliver!Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, just scream Christmas to me.  If musicals aren't your cup of tea, you could opt for The Nutcracker - another festive favourite.

Christmas Cheers
.
Who said you had to wait for Christmas day to indulge in some mulled cider or pigs in blankets? Since you are most likely to spend the 25th with your family, why not organise a make-shift Christmas dinner with your friends or flatmates? A lot of gastro-pubs and other restaurants offer a set Christmas menu if spending the day behind the stove is your idea of hell.

Christmas on Ice
.
Ice skating is one of England's favourite festive pastimes and with ice rinks popping up everywhere, it's also one of the easiest ways to get in the spirit. Don't forget to wrap up warm though because brr… Baby it's cold outside. Yes, I went there.

"Oh, Santa Baby…"
.

d

No Christmas would be complete without a festive soundtrack. Mine mainly consists of old school Bing Crosby and Dean Martin tunes, as well as some seriously cheesy songs. Who can resist Mariah's 'All I Want for Christmas' or Madonna's 'Santa Baby'? Certainly not me!

Baked Goods
.
Mince pies, cinnamon rolls, gingerbread - they are all a little taste of Christmas. Invite friends over, put some music on and get your bake on. If you decide to organise a little bake-off, may I suggest you go for this gingerbread biscuit recipe, by the Hummingbird Bakery. It really is a winner.

Here are my favourite ways to get into the Christmas spirit - what about yours? Is there anything you are particularly looking forward to this year?
